Day 5

Bike to Fuli - Boat back to Yangshuo

The next morning, we had a good breakfast at the hotel and wrote some postcards purchased from the Hello Water Lady. Today we were determined to take a boat trip. The dock at Yangshuo was mobbed with tourists and annoying souvenir salespeople, so I suggested we get bikes again and ride to the village of Fuli which sounded cool and unmobbed from the description in the Book. On the road there, we once more experienced the psycho bus drivers - only now we were the poor souls on the bicycles as they barreled past swerving from side to side leaning on their horns.

Fuli was an interesting little village. We rode around the narrow winding streets for awhile. At one point, we past piles of raw meat lying on the street around a man who was carving meat off what looked like a dog skull. Yikes! I had been laughing before the trip because I found the phrase, "Wo bu chi gourou," in a book on China, which means, "I do not eat dog." now I realized it was no joke. We rode to the riverfront to find a boat. A woman approached us about a boat and it sounded like a good deal so we said we'd take it.

The boat wouldn't available for an hour or so. I wanted to ride some more on my bike and Amy wanted to relax at the outdoor cafe by the river. I took off across a small stone bridge and found some farmer's fields and some grazing water buffalo. I contemplated nature and bumpy rocky terrain until it was time to return. There weren't any other tourists around so we had to pay a little extra but we had a whole boat to ourselves. The boat ride back to Yangshuo was very peaceful and beautiful and spiritual and all that good stuff. It was as though all the stress and discomfort of the trip had disintegrated from my mind by the time we got back.
We had dinner at an outdoor restaurant and explored the other parts of the town by bike afterwards.
