Day 9 Bus to Wanzhow Yangtze River by Hydrofoil |
| On the bus to Wanzhow, we got the expected treat of watching the Arnold
Scharzenegger film, "The Sixth Day" with Chinese subtitles. I
got a photo of Robert Duvall
on the overhead TV screen. We saw a lot of misty
mountains this day. I wondered briefly if this was the inspiration for
the Led Zeppelin song, "Misty Mountain Hop." By one in the afternoon we were on the dock at Wanzhow awaiting the hydrofoil. To build this hydrofoil, you start out with a high-powered speed boat and stretch it out to accommodate a few hundred seats. This boat is really fast - or as you'd say in Brooklyn, "This ship be maaaaad fast yo!" I stuck my head out the door and it felt like we were doing at least 60mph. I'm no expert on hydrofoils but it seems as though the whole boat lifts up out of the water and skims across the top. We flew past a dozen cruise ships like they were sitting ducks. I think I would have gotten really bored chugging along at the rate they were moving. |

| I'm not going to spend a lot of time trying to describe the Three Gorges because I've included a lot of photos on this website. The hydrofoil had two open bays toward the rear where I spent most of the voyage with the wind in my face, taking it all in. It was quite an exhilarating experience. After the morning's fiasco, I was asking myself if I even should have come to China, but the Three Gorges put me back in the right frame of mind. | Hydrofoil |
