Day 4 Yangshuo |
| When I woke up again, I could already those strange Dr. Seuss mountains that I had seen on the walls of so many Chinese restaurants in the United States. I read somewhere that they are called Karsts. They are peculiar indeed. As soon as we got off the bus in Yangshuo, we were approached by several people with hotel rooms they wanted us to see. We had a look at one that was quite nicely furnished but was right next door to a construction site. The book mentioned a hotel called the Bamboo House that was supposed to be quiet. | Extremely large lumps called karsts More Karsts! |
| We found the Bamboo House and it was nice, so we took a room. They had bikes for rent so we got a couple. Yangshuo isn't very big, so it didn't take long before we were out in the country. It was quite a welcome change from the hyperurban Hong Kong and Shenzhen environments. We rode for hours past lush green fields, tiny villages, stone huts and water buffalo. | Biking through the countryside |
| The only person we talked to was a persistent woman on a scooter who kept riding up to us yelling, "Hello water!" This was about the extent of her English. She was also selling postcards, paper fans and bamboo back scratchers, which we eventually bought. Late in the afternoon, we rode back into town. We found a place to have some dinner and a beer. After that, we explored the town for awhile and then called it a night. | Water Buffalo Crossing |
